It's a long ride from the suburbs of New York City to the
beautiful city of Madrid, Spain. The musical ride that
the band Madrid has taken over the years has not been brief
either. Since their early teens the members of Madrid,
the two brothers Carl and Lou Francese, have played music
together and apart for over 20 years. But as the sayings
goes (or should be changed to), the family that sticks together,
eventually records together.
Their first band in the late 1970's had the young teenagers
playing at nightclubs that they were too young to enter.
Performing for wages that barely paid for gas and dinner,
the brothers soon discovered that the road to musical success
wasn't going to be easy. But the small taste of fame
was a good one, and second and third helpings were desperately
needed.
With the music and technology changes of the 1980's, the musical
style that would endure for Madrid began to take hold.
Carl, still too young to go to the hot night spots, would
sneak into the favorite home town club with his older brother
Lou to hear the new sounds from bands like The Psychedelic
Furs, The Ramones and Duran Duran. Eventually Carl and
Lou would perform on that same stage but in separate bands.
In the early 1990's, it looked as if music was not going
to be a way of life for either Lou or Carl. Both were
now married and pursuing other careers. However, you
can take the man out of music, but you can't take the music
out a size 10 comfortable walking shoe.
